Our Story
From the open plains of the karoo to your home. a heritage of warmth, craft, and quiet authority.
A sculptor turns cold Carrara sandstone into something that breathes. We turn raw fleece into something that warms. Same belief, different hands.
At Karoo Baba, we make objects that hold two truths at once — stone and wool. Not a contradiction. A balance.
Founded in South Africa in 2017, we set out to reimagine what luxury objects for the home could be — pieces with the soul of an artwork and the comfort of something you reach for every day.

Michele Viljoen
Founder & creative director
She grew up on a remote farm in the Eastern Cape, where sheepskin wasn't a luxury — it was simply part of life, used and valued the way the land intended. That early closeness to the material became the foundation of everything she would later build.
It's why every skin is still locally and ethically sourced from Karoo farms, and why every piece is handmade by small family businesses across the Cape and the Karoo. The principle hasn't changed since childhood: use what the land gives, waste nothing, make it well.
True warmth is only appreciated when you know the cold.
Craft over speed
Each piece takes weeks, not hours. We refuse to compromise the traditions that give our products their soul.
Nature honored
Our sheepskin is ethically sourced from Karoo farms. Every hide is a byproduct of the food industry — nothing wasted.
Timeless design
We create pieces meant to outlast trends — objects that grow more beautiful with age, like the marble that inspires them.
